Itinerary Details

The Bluegrass state is known for a couple of things, most notably Bourbon and Horses and that’s exactly what you’ll find in this horsepower itinerary! We boast beautiful horse farms, live racing, and several opportunities to get up close to these famed creatures in either a family friendly setting or adult only weekend getaway, you choose! Browse this three day itinerary for tales and tips on how best to experience the “original” horsepower of Kentucky.

DAY 1 & 2

  • The northern central part of Kentucky includes Lexington and all the surrounding suburbs and smaller communities.
  • They don’t call Lexington the “Horse Capital of the World” for nothing! Between horse farms, the Kentucky Horse Park, Keeneland, and other horse activities, every age of equine lover is sure to find something to enjoy in Fayette County!
  • The Kentucky Horse Park showcases the legends of the Kentucky Derby and will host shows and events all throughout the year! You could easily spend 3 days in Lexington alone learning about the horse industry there.
  • For adult only trips, consider touring a number of distilleries throughout the area, or hangout in downtown Lexington with a variety of restaurants, bars, and live entertainment options!
  • Make sure to venture out and also visit Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Stables in Scott County or take a guided ride at Whispering Woods Riding Stable!
  • Oldham County is sure to not disappoint at their beautiful horse farms and training arenas such as Highpointe Farm training Center, and retired racehorse sanctuary Chestnut Hall!
  • These horse farms are rich with stories and heritage as they care for bloodlines and traditions from one generation to the next.
  • Spend a day in Franklin County, where you will not only find our Capitol and state government, which provides ample tourist opportunities, but also a unique equine experience in a ranch style horse show!
  • Not to mention this is the home of Buffalo Trace Distillery, where tours are sure to fuel your tastebuds!
  • If you find yourself winding down a country road, be sure to wander towards Anderson County for the Lawrenceburg Fair and Horse Show!

 

DAY 3

  • Head east for the day and spend the afternoon in another small town, Mt. Sterling, Kentucky in Montgomery County where old becomes bold! With a vibrant downtown scene, this quaint small town also offers a unique movie drive-in experience! The Judy Drive-In has been entertaining visitors since 1952!
  • You might also consider heading south towards Anderson or Mercer County for a day spent outdoors!
  • If you’re into motors, be sure to make a pit stop in Scott County! Book a free tour at the Toyota Assembly plant in Georgetown, Kentucky in Scott County. This gigantic facility gives people a “souped up” look into how the horsepower is made and what it takes to keep the wheels on the road!
