Itinerary Details
When it comes to Kentucky Horse Power, who said it had to stay on land? The Commonwealth of Kentucky has over 90,000 miles of navigable waterways, more than any other state in America besides Alaska! Dive in to this three day itinerary of our lakes and rivers and discover why Kentucky horsepower works well beyond it’s usual means of cars and engines.
DAY 1
Big or small Kentucky waterways have got it all! If you find yourself in the northern or central half of the state, consider a visit to our smaller lakes.
- Herrington Lake is located near Harrodsburg, Kentucky in Mercer County. This lake is 2,335 acres and is known as a recreational boating lake, however, you might also catch a variety of bass species or bluegill too!
- Beaver Lake is a tiny little reservoir in Anderson County. You will actually find very little horsepower in use at this reservoir, but sometimes we all need a break right? Fish off the pier or shoreline for crappie, a variety of bass species, and other pan fish. Consider staying the night in one of the quaint communities and tour a distillery while you’re at it!
- Another small but busy waterway is Nolin Lake in Edmonson County! This 5,800 acre lake borders Mammoth Cave National Park, which allows for scenic views similar to taking a Sunday drive.
Day 2
Big water equals Big Fun! Head south for the second largest body of water in the Commonwealth, also known as the House-boating Capital of the World…Lake Cumberland!
- After finding accommodations for night two, head out for the water in Russell County! Whether renting a houseboat for an extended stay or fishing boat for the day, Lake Cumberland has you covered!
- Be sure to schedule this trip to Pulaski County and Lake Cumberland during their highly anticipated Thunder Run on Lake Cumberland! This poker run is full of horsepower as it attracts some of the FASTEST boats on the market. This event is hosted annually in month of June! Whether your a participant or bystander, you’ll be impressed by the roar of engines during the Thunder Run!
Day 3
Thrills, reels, and Rides!
- If you find yourself in Western Kentucky, you have got to check out the South’s Great Lake, Kentucky Lake! This 160,000 acre reservoir in Marshall County is the final stop in the TVA system. It’s most notably known for being a fishing Mecca! Fish for bass, crappie, catfish, sauger, bluegill, and more! The lake is home to Major League Fishing where the thrill of early morning takeoffs and catching that big fish can be seen on the national stage!
- About 30 minutes from Kentucky Lake, you will find more thrills at Venture River Water Park! This family friendly attraction in Lyon County features waterslides, a wave pool, lazy river, and more! Race like the thoroughbreds on competing water slides. The horsepower may be working behind the scenes, pumping thousands of gallons of water throughout the park, but it sure does make for a fun day!
- For a unique water-based horsepower experience, head over to Crittenden County to board the Cave-In-Rock Ferry boat. Stay in your car and cross the river to explore this cave in our neighboring state of Illinois!
Whether it’s 3 days all across the waterways of Kentucky or 3 days at just one of the many lakes or rivers we boast, it’s pedal to medal all day at these boating and water-based destinations! Start your engines and get planning today!
